Family Films: Into The Spiderverse

Sundays are quiet at our house. After church we stick close to home for chores and easy family time: Laundry, cooking for the week, the pool, a bike ride. Our favorite Sunday tradition has become pizza dinner and a family movie. After a long week and a busy weekend it is a great way to finish off the weekend: snuggled on a couch together, enjoying the story, an Aldi five dollar pizza and sometimes folding that previously mentioned laundry!

Whether it is Friday night for your family, Saturday morning after chores or Sunday, like ours...this week's feature of Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse will have you all wanting to press play again.

Have you seen it yet?!

In the first five minutes you see working parents balancing jobs, parenthood and still flirting. Miles has a conflict about school with his father because school is hard and he is not with his neighborhood friends. He argues about leaving to go back to his old school. The father-son dynamic plays out in a pre-teen's complaints and a father who listens, hears, teases his son in love and sends him out to do the hard thing despite his fear. This father intentionally keeps his son in uncomfortable situations to teach him and push him to be better, to be more respectful and hard-working which is a theme in this movie. But, so is support, love, teamwork and community. "Our family doesn't run from things Miles" his mom reminds him while also giving him the freedom to rest at home and feel safe.

I cannot say enough great things about this move...WATCH IT, with kids, without kids! It speaks about life, challenges, heartbreak, friendship and the internal battle we fight against ourselves to do what we know is right for others.

We all want to be part of something bigger than ourselves, we want to contribute and to matter. This movie shows the effort and the struggle it takes to be part of a team
Miles was able to take a leap of faith because people believed in him and loved him. He was encouraged in the challenge and taught how to walk through the hard moments, not run from them and avoid them. His family and his friends give him room and time to grow and learn and fail and try again!

Strength and confidence are produced when it life isn't defined by what you mess up or get it right. Taking the leap of faith to try, to fight and learning from the outcome creates courage to try in all circumstances. This movie shows a family who has life and love, freedom to be wrong and admit it, to confess and forgive. It is a family style I want for my family and I am so thankful for an example on the screen!
